The president of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa, appointed a new army chief before the protests planned Monday, called by a group of war veterans who wish to force the president to resign.
The former mayor, Emmanuel Matutu, takes over immediate effect.
President Mnangagwa has faced calls from his former supporters to stop citing poor management and corruption.
Earlier this week, Mnangagwa abruptly withdrew his Army Chief, Lieutenant General Anselm Sanyatwe, who appointed him Sports, Minister of Arts and Culture.
