Note that when Trump speaks of foreign countries, he almost always refers to the properties he owns there, a golf course in Scotland or a hotel in Dubai. Do not simply boast. He says he has skin in the game and, therefore, understands the country.
This is not a president who puts a lot of store in intangible multilateral defense agreements that allow the United States to pay the protection of Danish Greenland. No, he wants the earth, not a complicated lease agreement.

And is it such a crazy notion? We are the nation that pushed Lewis and Clark through the rock mountains. We have acquired Alaska and Hawaii, Guam and all the small micro-islands in which no one has been.
The last time that the United States grew in territory was in 1947 with the incorporation of the Marshall Islands and some others, but these last 78 years have been an atypical. Before that, the appetite of the land of the United States was almost insatiable.
So why not Greenland?
The only reason why Greenland is Danish to begin with is that 1,000 years ago some Vikings ran into him. Since then, it has been too cold for someone else to bother with that.
And although, ultimately, it must depend on the people of Greenland to decide their sovereignty, that is not the only consideration in a world where Arctic control could mean the control of the world.
Trump’s interests, that is, the interests of the United States, can be better attended by possessing the strategic nation.

More than anything else, what is brought on the path of a big problem to buy Greenland, something that the United States tried to do after occupying and protecting the great island in World War II while Denmark was under German domain, is the war order after the war of the last 40 years.
Under the neoliberal bromuros of leaders with good hair, the West, led by the United States, saw newly minimized borders in Europe and other places as sacrosanct, set as the firmament, immovable, which goes against all human history, including that of the United States.
It worked for a while. There has not been the third World War, but even in the mid -1990s, the former Yugoslavia was descending to violent chaos, there is no peace in the Middle East, and Russia has spent decades again drawing its border with Ukraine in blood.
For Trump, and for many Americans who think like him, if countries like Russia are expanding, if China has the eye of doing so, then we cannot sit aside, especially if the defense of the free world is carried out in our ten cent.

In chess, at the beginning of the 20th century he saw the appearance of the hypermodern style in which the conventional wisdom that pawns must physically occupy the important center of the board was thrown in favor of the powerful pieces that control the center from the distance.
But unlike chess, geopolitics does not have a firm and discreet set of rules. Then, one can see why Trump prefers the idea of physically maintaining space, instead of allowing it to be protected by a vague collection of western interests.
Because we have been conditioned by the order of the post cold war, it sounds strange when Trump refers to the borders as “artificial lines.” But it is absolutely true: borders are negotiated, and they could even think of them as a kind of real estate agreement.

Nobody wants to go to war on Greenland, but that is not a reason not to launch this treatment to the 57,000 people who live there. The United States has a lot to offer, and maybe Trump can make them an offer too good to reject.
In any case, as Americans, we should not surprise or be shy by the idea of expanding our territory. It’s not just what Trump has always done, he is in the United States DNA.
