Stewart’s non -profit group describes itself as an “independent and non -denominational satanic church.” According to Stewart, the event initially caught little attention until accusations arose that he stole consecrated bread from a local Catholic Church for use in the black mass.

Stewart and about 30 of the members of his group gathered outside the state house to protest what they called favoritism towards Christians. Hundreds of Christian counterprotestors sang hymns and urged them “Accept Jesus“
The governor of Kansas, Laura Kelly, temporarily prohibited protests within the day after the Catholic groups pressed her to stop the black mass. Catholic leaders described the event as a despicable act of anti -Catholic intolerance. “Kelly issued his order on March 12, which asked Stewart and his followers.
“There are more constructive ways of protesting and expressing disagreements without insulting or denigrating sacred religious symbols“Kelly said in an announcement about the event.
Pastor Jeremiah Hicks of the Church Cure in Kansas City, Kansas, warned that not allowing the event.
“The Bible says that Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy, so when we dedicate a state to Satan, we dedicate it to death,” he said.

The followers of the satanic cave argued that the event was about freedom of expression. Stewart’s wife, Maenad Bee, told reporters: “He is only exercising his rights to the first amendment.”
Two other Stewart followers, Jocelyn Frazee, 32, and Sean Anderson, 50, were also arrested by illegal assembly. Frazee had no bond establishment, and Anderson’s bond information was not available at the time of publication.
Marcus Schroeder, 21, a Christian counterprotester who tried to take Stewart’s script, was also arrested for disorderly behavior. His bonus was set at $ 1,000.
