Richard Chamberlain, the best known actor for his role in the medical drama of the 1960s, Dr. Isso and the main role in Shogun, has died at age 90, his publicist confirmed to the BBC.
Chamberlain obtained the title of “King of the Miniseries” for his main roles in Shogun and The Thorn Birds.
He died late on Saturday night local time (10:15 GMT on Sunday) in Waimanalo, Hawaii, after suffering complications for a stroke, confirmed his publicist Harlan Boll, only a few hours before having turned 91 years old.
Martin Rabbett, Chamberlain’s couple, called him a “surprising and loving soul” in a statement.
He said: “Our beloved Richard is with Los Angeles now. He is free and rises with those loved ones before us.”
Babbett added: “Love never dies. And our love is under its wings, raising it to its next great adventure.”
Chamberlain’s great rest occurred in 1961, when he became a family name like Dr. James Killare in Dr. Kitare. The program, based on a popular series of films of the fifties and 40, attracted millions of spectators and made it a loved figure.
He became king of the television miniseries of the 1980s, playing a western prisoner in Shogun and a Catholic priest tempted by love in the spiny birds.
The latter won 60% of the American television audience and obtained 16 Emmy nominations.
He denied being Gay when he faced a French magazine in 1989, and did not speak publicly about his homosexuality until he turned 70.
Chamberlain revealed that he was gay in his 2003 biography shattered love. Despite a 30 -year relationship with actor and director Rabbett, they had maintained their private life in secret.
In interviews that promote memories, he advised other handsome actors to maintain sexuality for themselves.
“I thought there was something very, very bad about me,” Chamberlain admitted. The couple separated in 2010.
Chamberlain was born on March 31, 1934 in Beverly Hills, California.
