A 56 -year -old man is being investigated in South Korea under suspicion of starting a mortal forest fire that killed 30 people.
The man, who has not been appointed, was making an ancestral rite for a family tomb in a hill in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang province, at that time.
It has been reserved, but not arrested, and will be called to question once the site investigation has been completed. He denies the charges.
On Sunday, authorities said the main fires had finally taken under full control, 10 days after they started, causing generalized damage to buildings, including historical temples.
According to the reports, the researchers spoke with the daughter of the suspect who is told that she told them that the fire began when her father tried to burn tree branches hanging on the graves with a lighter.
According to the forest service of Korea, the fire burned more than 48,000 hectares, equivalent to approximately 80% of the size of the capital of Seoul.
It also destroyed an estimate of 4,000 structures, including houses, factories and several national treasures.
The Goun Temple, a Unesco World Heritage site, was among the temples destroyed in the fire. It was built in 618 AD and was one of the largest in the province.
Most of the victims were people between 60 and 70 years old.
Driven by strong and dry winds, the fires extend to several cities and counties.
The unusually warm climate, dry conditions and pine forests in the region also helped feed the flames.
The next week an investigation will be carried out that involves the police, the Fire Department and the Forest Management.
The interim president Han Duck-Soo said that the Government would provide financial support to those who have been displaced by the fires.
