Meghan Markle Since marrying into the British royal family, she’s faced plenty of challenges — but she hasn’t let them dim her light.
Former Suits the star fell into a vortex of romance with prince harry in 2016 and by November 2017, the couple were engaged. Making headlines during a candid interview with the BBC shortly after their engagement, Meghan and her then-fiance opened up about the extreme negativity they were exposed while living in the public eye.
“Of course, it’s disheartening,” Meghan said at the time. “You know, it’s a shame that’s the climate of this world… but at the end of the day, I think I’m really proud of who I am and where I come from, and we’ve never focused on that. We just focused on who we are as a couple. And so when you take away all the extra layers and all the noise, I think it’s really easy just enjoy it together and tune out everything else.”
The duo got married in May 2018 the first black member of the royal family was groundbreaking in its own right, but Meghan shocked the world once again when she gave birth son Archie, Queen Elizabeth IIFirst biracial great-grandchild in May 2019.
Eventually, the stress of royal life became too much. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their leadership roles at the palace in January 2020 and three months later settled in Los Angeles with their son. In July 2020 a family of three moved to the quieter neighborhood of Montecito in Santa Barbara, California. Meghan and Harry continued to put down roots in California as they expanded their family with daughter Lilibet, who they welcomed in June 2021.
