The next Star Trek Show has to be every Star Trek Show

While Star Trek: Discovery ended up being a relatively divisive show in the fandom, creator Bryan Fuller originally wanted it to be an anthology show that would serve as the ultimate love letter to fans. He planned each season as a different story set in a different time period, making it the science fiction equivalent of shows like American Horror Story. Paramount passed on the idea, but now it Discovery is done and Star Trek is at a creative crossroads, the time has come to make this anthology show a reality.

The hit TV series Star Trek Needs

What would make such a series a hit, especially for fans disappointed that we’re not getting a Star Trek: Legacy show? First, the anthology format means we get a fresh crop of new characters and actors every season. Fans who hated the main characters of any given season (cool but questionable Starfleet girl Michael Burnham, for example) could look forward to whatever the following season would bring, as opposed to just tuning out the show altogether.

Moreover, a Star Trek an anthology series would solve the ongoing problem of different fans wanting shows set in different time periods. Not every fan wants a prequel like Strange new worlds (no matter how good the show is), just like not every fan wants a show set many centuries in future continuity (eg. Discovery after season 2). Meanwhile, Picard’s third season was a huge success precisely because it was set in the immediate future A new generationallowing us to see what our favorite characters have been up to.

Doing The Impossible: Every Trekkie’s Delight

In this case, a Star Trek anthology show would do the impossible—namely, please almost all fans—simply by setting each season in a different time period. That’s what Bryan Fuller originally wanted to do with Discovery: its concept was to start as a TOS prequel, then focus on the TOS era, and then focus on LPG era and eventually move into a far future that audiences have never seen before. A new anthology show wouldn’t necessarily go in that chronological order, but its format could still make a fragmented fandom happy by giving it a brand new show every season.

Plus, now that the Star Trek bigwigs have confirmed that we won’t be getting a Heritage show, the anthology series is our only way to follow up on beloved characters like Riker, Dr. Crusher, Seven out of nineand so on. They could appear for an episode or even an entire series shortly after Picard era; for that matter, the next season could follow on fromPicard characters. WHO No do you want a season focused on Admiral Archer or Admiral Janeway? The actors behind these popular characters would be much more likely to return to the franchise if they didn’t have to sign multi-year, seven-season contracts.

I’m a Star Trek fan who enjoyed a lot of the NuTrek era. Discovery and Picard were mixed bags for me Strange new worlds and Lower deckwith were amazing. But I’m worried about the future of the franchise for a number of reasons: Starfleet Academy is a teenybopper bait based on a prematurely canceled series, Section 31 it looks like action movie schlock and the next movie will be a redundant Federation movie. Star Trek is at a creative crossroads, and what an anthology show could do for the franchise Captain Kirk they did what they did best: turn death into a fighting chance for life.
