Mel Gibson has revealed that his house was destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires while he was recording Joe Rogan’s podcast.
The Oscar-winning movie star said his Malibu property was “completely burned” and criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom over the crisis.
At least 10 people have died in the wildfires, which have burned thousands of buildings and prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.
A host of celebrities have told how they lost their properties, while officials warned that more strong winds could further fan the flames of the bushfires.
Gibson said he felt “uncomfortable” during his visit to Austin, Texas, to appear as a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience, because he knew his neighborhood was “on fire.”
“It’s devastating and emotional,” Gibson said on NewsNation. Elizabeth Vargas Reports.
“I have freed myself from the burden of my things because they are all in ashes.”
The Braveheart star said she had lived on her property for about 15 years and that some of her neighbors’ houses had also “disappeared”, including one belonging to actor Ed Harris.
Gibson said his family had followed an evacuation order and were safe.
In it podcast with RoganGibson criticized the California governor, saying Newsom claimed he was going to “take care of the forests” but “did nothing.”
“I think all of our tax money probably went to Gavin’s hair gel,” the actor said.
Los Angeles is facing the worst wildfires in its history, which have consumed 31,000 acres (12,500 hectares) of land and caused the evacuation of 180,000 people.
Five wildfires are still burning in the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth, Hurst and Lidia areas of Los Angeles.
California Fire Chief David Acuña told Radio 4’s Today program that 10,000 structures were likely destroyed. He also warned that the winds in the coming days could cause further destruction in the area.
Republican President-elect Donald Trump has called for Democrat Newsom to resign over his handling of the crisis, saying that “one of the best and most beautiful” parts of the United States is “burning to the ground.”
Newsom defended the response and said state officials were “putting everything at our disposal” to protect communities.
The governor’s spokeswoman accused Trump of politicizing the disaster and said Newsom was focused on protecting people and making sure firefighters had the resources they need.
US President Joe Biden said he had promised additional federal resources to help California after the “most extensive and devastating fire” in the state’s history.
Paris Hilton and Billy Crystal are among the celebrities whose homes have been destroyed by the bushfires.
Hilton, the hotel heiress and reality TV star, shared a video of the remains of her property on social media and said “the heartbreak is truly indescribable.”
Actor Crystal said in a statement that he and his wife Janice were “heartbroken” by the loss of their Pacific Palisades home where they had lived since 1979.
TV presenter Ricki Lake said she had lost her “dream home” and added: “I grieve along with everyone who suffers during this apocalyptic event.”
US Office star Rainn Wilson shared a video of his house burning down and said there was a “valuable lesson” to be learned from the bushfires.
Actors Sir Anthony Hopkins, John Goodman, Anna Faris and Cary Elwes also reportedly lost their homes.
Meanwhile, Pacific Palisades resident actor Steve Gutenberg helped move parked cars to make way for fire trucks.
“This is not a parking lot,” he told KTLA. “I have friends up there and they can’t evacuate.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who live in California, are understood to have invited friends and loved ones who had been forced to evacuate to their home.
In a statement on their website, Harry and Meghan said: “If a friend, loved one or pet needs to evacuate and you can offer them safe shelter in your home, please do so.”
