Bill Haney says Devin will take a full year off to rest his body and work on blocking the left hook before returning to the ring in 2025. Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) has been out of the ring for seven months since his loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20 and seems shaken by that loss.
One year waiting time
Former two-division world champion Haney’s decision to take a full year off means he will wait until Kingry’s one-year suspension expires in April 2025 before fighting again. Devin’s decision to sit and reflect on his loss for an entire year, until Ryan is available, isn’t exactly brave, but there’s too much money on the line for him to put it at risk.
However, this is an expected move because it is too risky for Haney to fight anyone and potentially lose. Being defeated would ruin Devin’s potential big-money rematch against Garcia. So it’s smart for Haney to sit back and wait for Ryan because whoever he faces will swing for the fences, looking to take advantage of Dev’s vulnerable chin.
If Haney were one of the Robber barons of the Golden Age like JP Morgan, John D. Rockefeller or Cornelius Vanderbilt, he would NOT sit for a year without keeping himself as busy as possible, taking advantage of his popularity to make millions fighting the best. Haney is not ruthless like super-rich robber barons and lacks the courage and ambition to get every penny he can while being as busy as possible.
Play safe?
“All fights are options. I believe in Devin and I believe in his abilities. I also believe in doing things well. I believe in being a trailblazer, being compensated for the position you’re in, and having the right deal structure. It’s more about the structure of the deal than anything else,” Bill Haney told Tru Media, speaking of his son, Devin Haney.
“One thing we can do is let his body rest. He is a young boy. He’s been traveling, he’s been fighting and he’s been doing. There were a lot of things that went into the (Ryan Garcia) fight,” Bill said of Haney.
“He was the one who said he was going to take a year off and I support his plan 100%. If he had said he wants to come back in four months, I would have supported him too. He said he wants to take a year off. He didn’t say he was retiring. In that year, we have the opportunity to see everyone else.
“We can be fans. We can follow the sport. One thing I said was that they still want to see us. I appreciate you wanting to watch us and follow me, brother,” Bill Haney said.
