Hugging Face has settled its lawsuit with artificial intelligence startup FriendliAI, which accused it of patent infringement


Hugging Face, an artificial intelligence development platform, has settled a lawsuit against Korean AI startup FriendliAI that accused Hugging Face of infringing one of its patents.

for a giving On Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Delaware, FriendliAI reached a “confidential settlement” with Hugging Face on Jan. 8, agreeing to dismiss its lawsuit “with prejudice,” meaning it cannot be brought back to court.

“FriendliAI and Hugging Face are hereby terminated without cost or compensation to either party,” the filing states. “The court retains jurisdiction over the parties’ settlement agreement.”

Hugging Face had not responded to a request for comment at press time.

In a lawsuit filed nearly two years ago, FriendliAI alleged that Brooklyn-based company Hugging Face infringed on a patent for “assembly with iteration-level planning.” VC-backed FriendliAI, also headquartered in Redwood City, California, was founded in 2021 and primarily develops infrastructure solutions for artificial intelligence.

Friendly AI claims Its patented technology, described in an application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, improves the process of collecting data input to an AI system to allow the system to process multiple queries. The patent also covers AI systems that allow ready-made requests from within a batch to be sent to the user and new requests added to the batch before the full set is processed.

FriendliAI sought compensatory damages, enhanced damages for “willfulness,” an injunction preventing further infringement or awarding license fees, attorneys’ fees and costs.
