Surace knocks out Munguía: He did what Canelo couldn’t

Jaime Munguía was surprisingly knocked out by Bruno Surace, a fighter with only four knockouts, on Saturday night in the sixth round of their clash at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico.

What made this knockout of Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) more impressive was that he had to get up off the ground in the second round to knock out Munguia again with a single punch in the sixth round.

What does that say about Canelo Álvarez? Not even he could knock out Munguía (44-2, 35 KOs) when they fought on May 4 in Las Vegas. Canelo defeated Mugnuia by unanimous decision in 12 rounds and never came close to knocking him out.

Losing in front of his hometown fans in Tijuana, Mexico, has to be a bitter pill to swallow for Munguía because everyone saw what happened. Its popularity is going to fall now in Mexico.

Berlanga’s plans fail

Edgar Berlanga took the news of Munguía’s resignation very badly. He hoped to fight him next in a showdown between Mexico and Puerto Rico on PPV. Berlanga complained that Munguía had damaged the bag, which is a fair statement.

Surace would knock Berlanga out because of the way he fought tonight. He would make his job easy just as he did with Munguía.

A fight between them on PPV would be impossible to sell, since both are coming off losses. It would be impossible to sell it, especially when one of them didn’t even try to win but simply came to survive.

What New York-born Berlanga should do is call out Surace and, if he can’t catch him, fight Caleb Plant. There is no bag for Berlanga. Canelo will not fight him again and Munguía surely will not either.
