Goal executive director Mark Zuckerberg criticized rival tech giant Apple for lackluster innovation efforts and “random rules” in a lengthy podcast interview on Friday.
“On the one hand, (the iPhone) has been great, because now almost everyone has a phone, and that’s what allows for some pretty amazing things,” Zuckerberg said in an episode of the show. “Joe Rogan Experience”. “But on the other hand… they’ve used that platform to set a lot of rules that I think feel arbitrary, and (I) feel like they haven’t really invented anything great in a long time. It’s like Steve Jobs invented the iPhone, and “Now they’re just sitting on it, 20 years later.”
Zuckerberg added that he thought iPhone sales were struggling because consumers are taking longer to update their phones because the new models do not represent major improvements over previous versions.
“So how are they making more money as a company? Well, they’re doing it by basically squeezing people out and, as you say, imposing this 30% tax on developers by forcing you to buy more peripherals and things that plug it in,” Zuckerberg said. “You know, they build things like Air Pods, which are cool, but they’ve just completely crippled anyone else’s ability to build something that can connect to the iPhone in the same way.”
Apple defends itself against the reaction of other companies by saying that it does not want to violate the privacy and security of consumers, according to Zuckerberg. But he said the problem would be solved if Apple fixed its protocol, such as improving security and using encryption.
“It’s insecure because you didn’t build any security into it. And now you’re using it as a justification for why only your product can connect in an easy way,” Zuckerberg said.
Zuckerberg said that if Apple stopped enforcing its “random rules,” Meta’s profits would double.
He also shot at Apple’s Vision Pro headphoneswhich had disappointing sales in the United States. Meta sells its own virtual headset called Meta Quest.
“I think Vision Pro is one of the biggest changes they’ve tried in a long time to do something new,” Zuckerberg said. “And I don’t want to give them a hard time too much, because we do a lot of things where the first version isn’t that good, and you want to judge the third version. But I mean, the V1 definitely didn’t hit it out of the park.”
“I’ve heard it’s very good for watching movies,” he added.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNBC.
