Apple’s board of directors has opposed a proposal to end the company’s Diversity, Effectiveness and Inclusion (DEI) programs.
In proxy documentThe National Center for Public Policy Research (a conservative think tank) is recommending that Apple “consider eliminating its Inclusion and Diversity program, policies, department and goals,” the company said.
Reference is made to the proposal of the think tank The latest decision of the Supreme Court against race-based affirmative action in colleges and notes that other companies have eliminated or scaled back similar programs, and it argues that DEI programs can leave companies vulnerable to lawsuits. (Most recently Meta has canceled DEI programsand Amazon is reported to have withdrawn.)
Apple, however, said the proposal was “unnecessary” because the company “already has a well-established compliance program” that would likely protect it from legal challenges. The petition also criticizes the proposal because it “seeks to unduly govern the company’s programs and policies.”
The company also said it strives to “create a culture of belonging where everyone can do their best.”
