A cat water fountain encourages cats to drink more water, which helps their overall health. After switching to a fountain, I noticed an increase in my cats’ water consumption. As a pet helicopter mom, I’ve become a fountain believer.
While automatic water fountains are better for your cats overall water consumption, they require a little more work and money. Instead of filling a bowl, these require a little more elbow grease, but it’s worth it for your cat’s health. In addition to regular filling and cleaning, you should disassemble the fountain to clean all parts, including the bowl and pipes, using a brush. You may need to disassemble the motor for a deep clean due to mineral buildup. They also have different types of filter cartridges specially designed for the brand’s fountains, which usually requires you to buy and replace filters monthly or more often.
Many of these fountains also have built-in apps that remind you when to clean, change the filter, and refill. Many also track how many times your pet drinks throughout the day, week, and month to track their habits and track changes. A cat drinking more or less water than usual can be a good indicator that something is wrong with its health.
I (and my cats) have tested the various models (and some technologically advanced) automatic pet water fountains currently available to see which ones are worth the money.

Cats sometimes struggle to consume enough water, which can potentially result fatal UTI and congestion especially in male cats. This is one of the reasons vets are moving more towards encouraging owners to feed their cats at least a partially wet diet, as it helps them consume more moisture, especially since cats don’t naturally consume as much water as dogs. Unlike dogs, cats are generally quite particular about their likes and dislikes, and cats can find standing water potentially harmful. (If the cat were in the wild, stagnant water has more potential for harmful bacteria). Cats are more attracted to moving water in nature, and these fountains encourage them to drink more by mimicking what they naturally attract.
To be honest, most of these fountains are pretty much the same. I looked specifically at the overall design – I like stainless steel because of the potential for a porous plastic shelter. harmful bacteria. I also prefer a wide reservoir with no high sides to help reduce the chance mustache fatigue. I prefer fountains with a small basin of water that is always available in case of low water levels or power outages. I considered the ease of installation, charging and cleaning as well as the overall design. Of course, there were some that my cats took to immediately, and some that they didn’t like so much.
I used each of these as my cats primary water source for a week. As mentioned, I noted the ease of installation, evaluated parts and filters, and generally compared different types of water fountains – spigot, bubbler, or waterfall. Some streams were continuous and some were intermittent (my cats didn’t prefer the intervals). Cats may also be curious and want to play with the machine instead of drinking, so be sure to give them time and keep another water source around until they are fully acclimated to the new device.
