TikTok ban is coming and Little sign that the Supreme Court will stop itusers are already looking for a new place to spend their days. Instead of turning to YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, out of both desperation and pettiness, many people are turning to RedNote (also known as Xiaohongshu), a social media app owned by China’s Xingyin Information Technology.
So many Americans have downloaded RedNote in the past few days that it’s gone crazy The best place in the Apple App Store. There have been existing users on the platform based mainly in China very hospitable to destitute users by posting videos explaining how to use the app with hashtags like #TikTokRefugeeshas gone viral among these programs. American users, meanwhile, took to the point to show respect to their new hosts by sharing Respect to President Xi. The parties have already begun to find a common language, including on them mutual respect For Luigi Mangione, the killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO.

RedNote isn’t a perfect TikTok replacement—its interface functions more like Pinterest than your standard endless video scrolling app, and it’s described as such. China’s Instagram—but it checks a few important boxes for creators worried about losing followers if the looming TikTok ban happens on January 19. First, it’s a vertical video-native platform similar to TikTok. Second, it has similar shopping features TikTok Store has become a boon for creators looking to build a showcase, dating back to the app’s early days. social shopping app focuses on fashion.
But perhaps as important as the functionality is the statement it makes. While TikTok has been banned by US politicians due to its ties to the Chinese government, it has been overshadowed by the presence of an American version of the app. headquartered in Los AngelesRedNote is clearly a Chinese-owned service. It is owned by Xingyin Information Technology Direct relations with the Chinese government. Now Americans are flocking to it very clearly because their government told them not to.
It’s hard to say how long the TikTok refugee movement will last on RedNote. The app certainly didn’t suffer before Americans clicked on it – it did worth $17 billion In 2024, and that was before the crash Total revenue is $1 billion for the year. But a new audience could give the app a reason to tap into a new market with plenty of money to burn.
American politicians will likely turn their anger on RedNote at some point if it continues to gain steam. While it’s unlikely that it will actually be the new TikTok, it will likely be subject to the same law that would effectively ban TikTok in the US as any Chinese company. The same goes for other obvious TikTok knockoffs like Lemon8 is prohibitedalso.
Frankly, if the US government wants to clamp down on these programs so much, perhaps it should stop American venture capitalists from pouring money into them rather than banning citizens from using them. It was US dollars, at least RedNote’s massive growth and TikTokand financiers seem happy to cash out almost anywhere, regardless of any concerns about “national security” or otherwise. It turns out that everyone spends the same regardless of money.
