Brooke Shields offers more details about his public conflict with Tom Cruise — and why she wrote that in a 2005 op-ed.
“If Tom had waved at me in public before I became a mother, I probably would have kept quiet. I would ignore his ridiculous rants. I could have been content to sit back while this very famous man hijacked my experience to push his own (delusional) agenda,” Shields, 59, wrote in her latest memoir. Cruise’s 2005 comments came just after Shields turned 40. In the book – released on Tuesday, January 14 – she explained how it changed her perspective.
“To sit back and let myself be challenged was my approach ten years earlier – I might even regret sharing my story or feel insecure that maybe my career had stalled while I was chosen by a powerful male film star, sure I never had a chance in that fight — but now I’m encouraged by life experience,” Shields wrote, adding that “my confidence is growing.”

After the release, Cruise continued Today show and “belittled me,” Shields wrote. Cruise, she recalled, called her “taking antidepressants” “dangerous.”
“According to Tom, I was spreading misinformation,” she wrote. “Interesting opinion from someone without ovaries.”
In response, Shields published an op-ed in The New York Times.
“I stood up for myself and for women who suffered against irrational and dangerous comments from an uneducated actor who was speaking completely out of his depth,” Shields wrote in Brooke Shields is not allowed to age, noting that the op-ed “caused outrage.” at Cruise and also “sparked discussions about the reality and prevalence of postpartum depression.”
