Four short months after it was actually introduced palm-sized NeoDJI is back with another pint-sized consumer drone. The Flip continues the drone giant’s interest in foldable form factors, with a quartet of propeller guards that essentially fold up for maximum portability.
According to the company, the new Flip continues to blur the lines in DJI’s existing consumer portfolio, combining “the simplicity of DJI Neo with the amazing photo capabilities of DJI Mini.” The $439 drone is much closer to the Mini 3 ($419) than the Neo ($199).
Obviously, the company is looking for photographers/videographers who want to simplify their outdoor shooting. The new drone can shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second, as well as slow motion video at 100 frames per second. As for stills, the camera can take 48-megapixel stills with up to 4x zoom.
It weighs the same as the Flip at 249 grams Mavic Minibut it’s heavier than the Neo’s 135 grams. However, with more weight comes a significant improvement in battery life. The Flip has a charge of 31 minutes versus the Neo’s 18. This is a significant difference for videographers.
The Flip also features automatic braking to avoid high-altitude collisions, as well as improved charging and data speeds. DJI equates the new Local Data Mode to a smartphone’s airplane mode, allowing the system to disconnect from the internet while in flight.
The Flip starts shipping in the US on Tuesday. What does the company’s ability to continue selling Stateside look like over the next four years? is anyone’s guess.
