In one particularly testy exchange on a conspiracy theory subreddit, two hair stylists clashed over Mangione’s eyebrows.
One user wrote: “I was a hairdresser 20 years ago, no one’s eyebrows grow that fast in three days.” “It was in the state board exam. The hair on your head grows a quarter of an inch a month. The hairs on your eyebrows grow more slowly.
“I’m also a hairstylist and I work with models,” another user replied. “Different lighting and different facial expressions create different shadows in photos. This man is trying to make a revolution. Don’t plot against a person who is for the people.”
This is just one of the conspiracy theories swirling around Mangione, though. Another popular theory is about the number 286 and its many connections to the shooter.
In his profile on X, Mangione introduces the 286th Pokémon, Pokémon Breloom. Mangione had also posted exactly 286 times on X when he was arrested. 286 is also the code used by health insurance companies “if the application period related to the health claim is not followed”.
Other TikTok users have pointed out a potential connection to the Bible, where Proverbs 28:6 says, “Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than the rich whose ways are crooked.”
Finally, some people on the internet claimed that the distance between the McDonald’s where Mangione was seen and the shooting location was 286 miles. However, According to Google Mapsthe distance is actually 279 miles.
Whatever the distance between it and Manhattan, this McDonald’s location itself has given rise to some conspiracy theories, as seen in the work of one Reddit poster who took the time to document the many connections between the board game Monopoly and the shooting.
First, they noted that the money obtained from the game was in the backpack found by the police in Central Park. They also noted that Altoona is home to the Pennsylvania Railroad, one of four railroads sold in the standard US version of the game. Finally, the poster noted that McDonald’s ran a promotional campaign with the game for decades, though it was briefly discontinued at the turn of the century. major cheating scandal among dozens of others, Gennaro “Jerry” Colombo, a key insider and alleged member of the Colombo crime family.
