I did not consume My first cup of coffee until I was 24, when I was forced to participate in an ad hoc cupping session by my former employer. At first I found black coffee to be disgusting, but my employer at my small chain coffee shop didn’t charge for more flavorful options like Minty Mocha Freeze, so my taste buds were forced to adapt. I slowly learned to enjoy the ritual of brewing fresh coffee in the morning and soon began to relish the opportunity to hang out with my dad and drink coffee all day while visiting my parents on holidays. Just two boys drinking Folgers from an irritated Mr. Coffee NCIS and Law & Order: SVU broadcast forever on television.
I eventually moved to Portland, Oregon during the height of the “third wave” of coffee and got a job at a high volume coffee shop and bakery. At this point, my coffee consumption went from a physiological necessity to a deliberate, ordered experience. Roasters like Stumptown and Joava taught me the principles of extraction, Black Rabbit He taught me how to clean and maintain my shop La Marzocco, and from year to year Seattle Coffee Gear outpost piqued my interest in the ever-expanding universe of grinders, brewers, potters and doodads that promise a fine cup of coffee in all sorts of scenarios.
