It’s a sad day for movie lovers. David Lynchthe influential creative master, whose style was so distinguished by his own face – “Lynchian”, of course, died. The news has been shared in a post on the official Facebook page:
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of David Lynch, the man and the artist. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. Now that he is not with us, there is a great void in the world. But as he said, “Keep your eye on the cat, not the hole.”

While this news represents a devastating loss for cinema, it’s not entirely a surprise; the news broke last year Lynch, who would have turned 79 on January 20, had been dealing with health issues related to a diagnosis of emphysema. (That is, the official announcement said no cause of death was given.) In recent months, the director has slowed down the publication of posts in one of his most visible creative spaces – his work. Lynch first shot to big screen fame with the 1977 indie film Eraser heada surreal horror tale with experimental elements starring the future Twin Peaks ensemble member Jack Nance. He followed it up with a biopic in 1980 The Elephant Man and 1984’s polarizing but well-loved Dune the adaptation was later spun off into a series of films that cemented his distinctive dreamy visual style and thematic interests: Blue velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Walk With Me On Fireand Lost highway. Following a somewhat surprising creative path with the Disney release Straight Storydid Mulholland Drive— originally intended as a television series — and his final feature, the 2006 fever dream thriller Inland Empire.
In addition to his film career, the ABC series in 1990-91 Twin Peaks became a cultural sensation and elevated it to more mainstream success; the show’s central mystery (“Who Killed Laura Palmer?”), the show’s unique structure, sense of rhythm, and truly offbeat humor have become an obsession among fans. Canceled after only two seasons, Twin Peaks It was created in 1992 Fire Walk With Me feature, as well as — to the breathless excitement of fans — 2017’s Twin Peaks: The ReturnShowtime’s 18-part limited series, representing Lynch’s final big-screen project.
In addition to directing films and television (including commercials and music videos), Lynch was also a talented musician, designer and visual artist, as well as an author and outspoken advocate of Transcendental Meditation. Apart from his directing and writing work, he was also a rare actor who played FBI agent Gordon Cole.
