Don’t call it a comeback, but Cameron Diaz has officially returned to the red carpet, so her first performance on the crimson carpet on Wednesday, January 15, after a ten-year hiatus from Hollywood.
When she performed at the Berlin premiere of her new Netflix film Back in actionshe turned heads in a full Gucci look with a decidedly relaxed twist that was in keeping with her eternally cool California girl aesthetic. She ditched the high heels in favor of Gucci penny loafers, which were the foundation of dark denim mom jeans and a sheer blouse, then tossed an oversized coat on top for an extra layer of flair.
But former model Diaz, 51, has always stood out on the red carpet, and her celebrity peers have long praised her directional style, a unique brand of poetic bohemia that has consistently set her apart.
In her Fashion May 2003 cover story by Diaz Charlie’s Angels costar Lucy Liu she said of her friend’s wardrobe: “For Cameron, it’s an art form and it’s all about transformation and change – like when a skirt becomes a top. Something could cost $10 or $10,000 – either way if they feel good about it. It makes it work. She defines her own fashion and people follow her.”
During her mercurial rise in Hollywood, her red carpet aesthetic acted like a masterclass in ’90s minimalism. She was a fan of all-black little black dresses that highlighted her mile-long legs, and she added a statement red heel to simple black halter trousers and a sweater thrown over her shoulders. She loved the fun hat, midriff-baring crop top, and lots (and lots) of blue eyeshadow—a look that would feel right at home on today’s Gen-Z stars.
As she got bigger roles, she occasionally made the worst dressed list. At the 2002 Academy Awards, she wore an Emanuel Ungaro Haute Couture kimono that is now considered ahead of its time.
“Cameron was a co-worker. They have always been open to mixing designers. She looked beautiful in the dress and was a joy. Cameron was ahead of everyone,” her stylists at the time, Clare and I have Hallworththey said. “She wore what she thought was right.
More than 20 years later, a recap of some of her best looks serves as definitive proof that Diaz has always been a red carpet winner.
