Savannah Guthrie was “terrified” to replace Ann Curry today

Being promoted to coach Today was a bittersweet success for Savannah Guthriewho took over the role after Ann Curry he left the show.

“I came in for the show at a time of a lot of controversy and I don’t think it was a happy occasion, really — for anybody, including me,” Guthrie, 53, said in an interview with Procession Posted on Friday, January 17th. “I was as scared as I could be because the bosses at the time had made a decision and I was literally the last one to know, so I was scared and I was pretty sure I wouldn’t last.”

Guthrie was the first to join Today in 2011 as chief legal correspondent and served as host of the 9 a.m. show. That same year, Curry took over from the Meredith Vieira like Matt Lauer‘with Today nomad. She he left the show just a year later amid rumors that NBC believed her and Lauer’s alleged lack of chemistry resulted in a low rating. (The source claimed My Weekly in July 2012 that Lauer, 67, also played a role in Curry’s departure.)

Guthrie was announced as Curry’s replacement in June 2012. Today.com stated that ratings were the main reason for the change in the host lineup.

While Guthrie was happy to take the coveted gig, she said Procession that she was “in tears” when she was offered the job. “And it wasn’t because I didn’t dream of this job like everyone else. It was because I was sure it wouldn’t last and that I would be sidelined within a few weeks or months.’

Now Guthrie told the paper that she is “so happy that I survived and I’m still here.” Her current host, Craig Melvinshe chimed in with the statement that she “thrived, not survived”.

In her time Today out, Curry he told viewers on air“It’s not like I ever expected to leave this couch after 15 years, but I’m so grateful.” She tearfully added: “And for all of you who saw me as a trailblazer, I’m sorry I couldn’t get the ball over the finish line. But man, I tried.”

Curry later announced that he had parting ways with NBC News in January 2015. “This is about reaching the edge of the future in journalism, which we know is going through an irreversible transition,” she said in a press release. “I’m excited about working to become a valuable link between traditional media and what’s to come.”

Hoda Kotb went on to replace Lauer in 2018 after he was fired from the show after a sexual abuse scandal. She say goodbye to Today after nearly 30 years working for NBC on January 10. Melvin assumed his role as Guthrie’s advisor on Monday, January 13th.

Curry opened up about her Today exit in an interview in September 2020 with Elleshe admitted she still “didn’t understand” why she was fired. “I know I didn’t do anything wrong. I know I was good at my job,” she declared. “They say where there’s smoke there’s fire.” You can read the tea leaves. But you know, I’m a fact-based reporter, so it’s hard for me to go out there with anything so close to the vest. I don’t know. I don’t know.”

Noting that the exit “still hurts,” she continued, “Honestly, it hurts really deeply because I really don’t think I did anything wrong. But despite the pain that still lingers, I know that I contributed to the fact that some people suffered less.”
