The best boy band cut out of the worst Star Wars movie

While critics may hate their bobby vibe, NSYNC is arguably the best boy band in the world, especially when you consider the later cultural and musical influence of star Justin Timberlake. Surprisingly, when NSYNC was in its prime, this best boy band appeared in possibly the worst Star Wars movie. In the 2023 episode Hotthe band confirmed that they were originally scheduled to appear in Attack of the Clones but that their cameo was ultimately cut from the film.

Part Hot” magic are the great questions asked by host Sean Evans, and in this episode he ended up asking NSYNC if they starred in the second Star Wars prequel. He asked if the movie was really going to be starring Jedi Knights, and Lance Bass pointed out that it wasn’t the whole band who almost made a cameo appearance…just Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, and Joey Fatone. However, Kirkpatrick was quick to point out the obvious about their cameo: “it never made it to the screen.”

NSYNC members Lance Bass and Justin Timberlake they recalled their anger at not being initially invited to appear in the second Star Wars prequel. “Me and Lance were so freaked out,” Timberlake said. This prompted Bass to offer a very nonchalant response: “they were cut anyway, so it doesn’t even matter.”

NSYNC got so close to Star Wars

The fact that NSYNC almost appeared in a Star Wars movie caused a wave of fanfare commonwealth years ago (more on that soon), but even most superfans don’t realize how close the boy group came to appearing in Attack of the Clones. In fact, they’ve been given combat training, the kind that would ensure they look at least halfway convincing when they charge into the film’s climactic battle for Geonosis. Joey Fatone coyly admitted that the practice also sounded convincing because “when we were doing the scenes” the musicians were “literally… going voom voom” like an idiot.

Interestingly, the only reason NSYNC was invited to appear Attack of the Clones the first being that Star Wars producer Rick McCallum’s daughter was a big fan of the band. The cameo was cut for two reasons, the first being SAG-AFTRA rules about extras. Joey Fatone later admitted that “Usually SAG rights have to apply to that” and “We only signed a confidential thing – which we didn’t say anything – but they had to cut us out of it.”

While Fatone’s story is a bit murky, it helps explain why NSYNC didn’t appear in the second Star Wars prequel. Specifically, that George Lucas and crew didn’t want any drama related to SAG. There was another reason why they got cut up, and that was revealed by Fatone’s brother Steve in 2015. Basically, the band’s performance in Attack of the Clones it was rumored before the movie even came out, and it caused such a backlash among fans that their look (complete with Jedi robes and Padawan braids) was scrapped entirely.

In retrospect, killing off the NSYNC Star Wars cameo was the best. At that time, the fandom was already reeling from poor quality A hidden threat. After this first prequel, there was much speculation as to whether George Lucas had lost the creative vision that led him to create this famous galaxy far, far away. Fortunately, Lucas helped say “Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye” to that speculation by cutting the band out of the film entirely.
