Zach Gilford is recovering after suffering a health scare earlier this week – with his sense of humor still intact.
“Soooo, yesterday was fun,” Gilford, 42, captioned a series of selfies via his Instagram Stories on Tuesday, Dec. 17. “Good thing we wrapped up @criminalminds last week.”
In the first two photos shared, Gilford showed off his face in what appeared to be a reaction that caused his face to swell and his eyes to close completely.
Meanwhile, the third and final image showed that his face was now fine.
“Thank you to all the nurses, doctors and staff at @huntingtonhospital for getting my face back to normal. …Still a little way to go,” he captioned the third image, giving a shout-out to the Californian hospital. He did not reveal any other details.
Gilford starred as Elias Voit on Criminal minds revival since his debut in 2022, a prolific serial killer who spent years building his own network of killers and assisting them in their crimes. While speaking exclusively to My Weekly in August, Gilford revealed that he was only supposed to appear in the first season before being asked to stay.
“I only signed a one-year contract,” she explained. “And part of the way through the first season, (showrunner) Erica (Messer) he told me: ‘I don’t know what will happen. We didn’t come to the end of the season, but we decided not to kill you. We want to keep you around.” So I went back and I was so happy I did.
The character remained a mainstay in Season 2 and will return for Season 3, which wrapped filming earlier this month. In addition to landing Gilford a juicy role in front of the camera, it also provided the actor with a major career milestone: his first time in the director’s chair.
“I wanted to direct forever. I shadowed on Friday night lights. I watched almost every show I went to,” gushed Gilford. “It’s hard to get an opportunity like this. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. And it was inspiring for me when I got to direct my episode because Erica and everyone was like, “Do your episode. Do whatever you want.'”
“It was bloody amazing,” he added. “It was so much fun.

Since then, they have worked together several times, including on the day Development.
Speaking to Us, Gilford recognized how “lucky” he was to be a part of Criminal minds franchise.
“I don’t understand how I got so lucky. I’ve been really lucky in my career, but it’s been cool,” Gilford shared about his experience with the CBS process. “Everybody who comes to that set says, ‘This is the best set I’ve ever been on,'” he said. Our. “It’s so much fun to work with my friends and they really are the best group of people. Then, aside, our crew is pretty damn awesome. They’re so hot, they’re so cool, they’re so funny, they’re so cool and they’re so good at what they do. I’m grateful to be on set (where) there’s such an atmosphere. It all flows from showrunner Erica Messer.”
