WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Donald Trump will be sworn in as president of the United States on Monday, ushering in his second term in office and delivering one of the most dramatic political turnarounds in American history.
Inauguration Day, traditionally, is marked by pomp and circumstance. One president leaves the White House, and another enters. But Trump, a Republican, has also promised to sign a series of executive orders on issues ranging from border security to oil and gas production on his first day in office.
Here’s what we know about Inauguration Day so far:
WHEN IS THE JUDGMENT?
Trump will take the oath of office, administered by US Chief Justice John Roberts, at 12 pm EST (1700 GMT). It was originally supposed to take place in front of the US Capitol but now it will take place inside the congressional complex due to the severe cold.
Trump will then deliver his inaugural address. In interviews, he said he was determined to raise and consolidate. That would mark a departure from his first Inauguration Day speech in 2017, which detailed a broken country that he described as “American murder.”
The president-elect, Democrat Joe Biden, said he planned to attend the ceremony and see the transfer of power, a courtesy Trump did not give him four years earlier.
Country music star Carrie Underwood is scheduled to perform at the inauguration, according to a copy of the official program seen by Reuters.
WHO IS TAKEN?
Trump has broken with precedent and invited several foreign leaders to the party. Historically, they have not attended the inauguration due to security concerns and have sent representatives instead.
Argentine President Javier Milei, a staunch Trump supporter, has said he will attend, according to reports.
Another Trump supporter, Hungary’s Viktor Orban, will not attend, his spokesman said this week. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she hopes to attend. Chinese President Xi Jinping is not going, even though he was invited, but he is sending a high-ranking ambassador.
Trump advisor Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla (NASDAQ:) and SpaceX, Jeff Bezos, executive chairman of Amazon (NASDAQ:) and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:), are also present.
PARAPE IN THE WHITE HOUSE
The temperatures also forced organizers to abandon a planned parade down Pennsylvania Avenue of military organizations, new school groups, float groups and civic groups. The event will now be held in a venue of 20,000 people Capital One (NYSE:) Arena in downtown Washington.
COMPLIANCE WORK
Two sources familiar with the plan said Trump is preparing a flood of executive orders and orders that could total 100 to begin on Day One.
He is expected to sign orders that give immigration officials more freedom to arrest immigrants without criminal records, send more troops to the US-Mexico border and begin construction of a border wall.
The orders will include efforts to increase energy production and follow Trump’s oft-repeated pledge to “build, baby, drill.”
Trump may issue the first wave of pardons for defendants found guilty for their participation in the attack on January 6, 2021, on the US Capitol.
MAQUETHA AND THE FALCON
There will be at least 18 rallies held across Washington over the weekend and into Monday, three of which are considered official and which Trump is expected to attend.
On Sunday, the night of his inauguration, Trump will hold a “Make America Great Again Victory Rally” at the Capital One Arena.
Such an event is likely to help thousands of Trump supporters flood the city for the inauguration festivities. It will be Trump’s first meeting in the District of Columbia since the January 6, 2021 event.
On Monday, Zuckerberg of Meta will host a reception for billionaire Republican donors along with casino magnate Miriam Adelson and Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, Trump’s choice for Italian ambassador.
Oil and gas magnate Harold Hamm, a major Trump donor, will host an inauguration ceremony Monday on the roof of the historic Hay-Adams Hotel near the White House.
WHO BEARS THE COST?
The official events are funded by Trump’s inauguration committee, which is led by longtime Trump ally Steve Witkoff, the real estate developer whom Trump has tapped to be his Middle East envoy. , and Kelly Loeffler, a former U.S. senator and Trump’s pick to lead the small group. Business Administration.
The committee will be responsible for paying for everything except the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, which is funded by taxpayers.
Bezos and Zuckerberg have pledged to donate $1 million to each committee, as have Apple (NASDAQ:) CEO Tim Cook and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Uber (NYSE: ) and its CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, each contributed $1 million to the fund.
Trump raised a record $106.7 million for his 2017 inauguration celebrations. His committee raised more than $170 million this time, according to media reports.
