Celebrity chef Jose Andres praised his “friends” Meghan Markle and prince harry for volunteering during the LA wildfires.
In an interview with People Posted on Saturday, January 19, Andrés, 55, said he was “happy” to see the couple “turning out like so many others”.
“I mean, listen, I consider them friends,” Andrés told the paper. “I know they’re in the spotlight – not in America, but in Britain – and from what I know, I can tell you they don’t have to, but they choose to.”
Andres is founder from World Central Kitchen, a non-profit organization that feeds communities in need in times of war or natural disaster. The organization is a long-standing partner of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation.
Markle, 43, and Harry, 40, recently teamed up with Andrés and World Central Kitchen to help with the ongoing wildfire relief efforts. The couple also donated items to those affected in the Pacific Palisades area, where the fires first broke out on January 7.
“You probably feel like it’s better if nobody does anything because nobody criticizes you for showing up — but the amazing thing is that they show up,” Andrés said.
Markle and Harry were before criticized Justine Batemanwho accused the pair of voluntarily participating in a “photo shoot”.
“Meghan Markle and Harry are no better than ambulance chasers.” How repulsive “photographing” they achieved. Do they ‘travel damage’? Are they politicians now?” Bateman, 58, wrote on X on January 11.
Andrés did not specifically address Bateman’s comments during the interview People.
However, he said that anyone who volunteers “will always have my applause and my appreciation”, regardless of whether or not they are a celebrity.
He continued, “The hugs I’ve seen (are) being given to people who know them and even people who don’t know them — they’re people who just want to be heard and hugged.”
“The joy they bring to people, the joy they bring to first responders or people who have lost everything … and to see those celebrities hugging and crying with people when some of those celebrities lose their homes — they can be at home.” , but they are there,” he said.
When the fires first started, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex they opened their home in Montecito, Calif. — about 80 miles from the fire — to friends who were affected.
Markle also delayed its release date upcoming Netflix series, With love, Meghanwhich was originally set to drop on January 15th. It will now premiere on March 4.
“I am grateful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch as we focus on the needs of those affected by the wildfires in my home state of California,” Markle said in a statement released on January 12.
