Cameron Diaz is ready to return to the role that made her famous.
The Back In action star, 52, said she would reprise her breakthrough role as Tina Carlyle in the sequel Maskbut only if the main actor Jim Carrey is back
“If Jim’s on board … I mean, I’ve been riding those coats since day one,” Diaz said Entering Hollywood in a recent interview.
Carrey, for his part, reflected on 30 years Mask and whether he would be interested in continuing to promote last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. “Oh god, you know, that has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess,” Carrey, 63, said ComicBook.com in December 2024. “It’s not really about the money. I joke about money… but you never know. You can’t be sure about these things. I said I would like to retire, but I think I was talking more about resting power. Because once a good idea comes your way or a group of people that you’ve really enjoyed working with and stuff like that, it just—things tend to change.”
Diaz made her mark in Hollywood in the original Maskshe plays nightclub singer Tina opposite Carrey Stanley Ipkis, who discovers a magical mask that transforms him into a debauched green-faced hero.
The actress continued her role in Mask with blockbusters such as There’s something about Mary, My best friend’s wedding and Charlie’s Angelsmaking her one of the biggest Hollywood stars of the 1990s and early 2000s.
Diaz quietly took a break from acting in 2014 after starring in the film Annie but now he’s back on the big screen across from her Annie costar Jamie Foxx on Netflix Back In action. The actress recently shared how much she loves taking time off from acting.
“Oh my god, I loved it. It was the best 10 years of my life,” Diaz said on the Friday, Jan. 17, episode of the series The Graham Norton Show. “I could just say, ‘I’m a mom, I’m a wife, I’m living my life.’
Diaz went on to say that leaving acting “made sense for (her) family” at the time because she and husband Benji Maddenwhom she married in 2015, has two children: a daughter, Raddix, born in 2019, and a son, Cardinal, born in 2024. Diaz added that after a while, “people stopped asking her” to take on new roles. “It was so beautiful,” she said.

“It’s a privilege to do this,” she told the host Graham Norton about acting. “I thought if I let it go, all the goodwill, all the things I’ve built up over so much time, the passion I have for entertaining people and making films that (make people) smile and laugh and have a good time and they’re sitting in the theater or they’re sitting at home and it moves them — if I don’t get into it again and give it a chance and participate in it and be grateful for it, I’d be crazy.”
