When it comes to anchoring a morning news show, one thing’s for sure — your alarm clock is long before sunrise.
and as a result, Savannah Guthrie has a stern warning for its new Today nomad Craig Melvin.
Before connecting Today six years ago, he was the evening news anchor for WIS in Columbia, South Carolina and weekend anchor for WRC in Washington, DC in 2008, where he met his wife, a sports reporter Lindsay Czarniak.
Husband and wife share a mutually exclusive love of sports.
As a result, Melvin admitted that he stayed up last night to watch the College National Championship instead of going to sleep in preparation for his 3:45 a.m. phone call.
Guthrie quickly admonished Melvin for his decision.
“I was up last night,” Melvin told Guthrie on Tuesday, Jan. 21, revealing he “had to see if the Ohio State Buckeyes could beat their opponents” the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, which they did 34-23.
“Again? You know this is a marathon, not a sprint. If you’re up every night watching football and getting up early, this can’t last,” Guthrie warned Melvin.
Melvin agreed with his coach, admitting that “I’m going to have to get ready again.”
Melvin anchors the first hour Today show from January 13. However, he has been a fixture during the show’s third hour for the past few years.
In an interview with ProcessionMelvin remembered how he found out about it Hoda Kotbdecision to step away from the anchor desk to spend more time with her daughters and mother.
“My dressing room is two more than hers and she knocks on my door one morning, which was unusual. And she said: “Do you have a moment?” She came and said, ‘I just wanted to tell you something. I’m leaving.”
Admitting that “no one leaves these jobs alone,” he said he first asked if Kotb was “sick.” When she assured him that she was fine and simply wanted to leave her seat while she was “on top,” Melvin pressed even harder.
“I was like, ‘Are they kicking you out?’ She said, ‘No Craig, I’m fine. I’m leaving.” It takes a certain kind of courage to quit anything when you’re at the top of your game.”
