David Benavidez says he hopes former Cuban amateur star David Morrell humble yourself at his feet after he beat him on February 1, admitting that the ‘Mexican Monster’ “is the best” after beating him at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) says ALL of his opponents follow the same formula in which they criticize him non-stop, saying that he is “lazy”, that he “has no defense” and that he is a limited fighter. But after he defeats them, they sing a different tune, showering him with praise.
What Benavidez isn’t pointing out is that the guys he’s been fighting throughout his long career were smaller guys, like Demetrius Andrade, Caleb Plant, David Lemieux, Anthony Dirrell and Ronald Ellis. Those were the best Benavidez fought before making the jump to 175 last June.
“I don’t have anything. I’m a vagabond. I’m a RoboCop. It’s good that he’s thinking like that,” David Benavidez told Boxing News about David Morrell seeing him as a second-rate fighter. “You better not have any excuses after I knock you out in front of your own people.
“What are you going to say? You are going to say that David Benavidez is the best. Like you and everyone else, I fought before. They say the same. After they get in the ring with me, it’s a completely different story. You are going to see it too,” said Benavidez.
As you can see, interim WBC light heavyweight champion Benavidez has created a completely unrealistic caricature in his head. The fight is more likely to go the other way, with Morrell winning and Benavidez saying afterwards: ‘How could I be so wrong?‘
It will be interesting to see if Benavidez, 28, can get away with fighting the same style he did at 168 when he steps into the ring with Morrell, who is a monster two-handed puncher.
Benavidez may not last long against Morrell fighting like he did in his last three fights, particularly against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. Morrell hits too hard and will drill Benavidez if he tries to overwhelm him with volume like he did against the 37-year-old Gvozdyk.
