Yellowjackets surprised viewers with some shocking plot twists ahead of the show’s third season.
The series has a dual timeline where viewers follow a high school football team in the past as they survive a plane crash in the wilderness before catching up with them more than two decades later as adults.
During the second season, which ended in May 2023, Lottie (Courtney Eaton) stepped down as the leader of the previous group and handed over the role to Natalie (Sophie Thatcher). After the teens ate Javi (Luciano Leroux) as a group woke up to the fire started by coach Ben (Steven Krueger), that burned their cabin.
Meanwhile, the present timeline took a dark turn when Lottie (Simone Kessell) suggested that the group must choose a sacrifice for the darkness. Lisa (Nicole Maines) intervened by trying to defend Lottie, and as a result Misty (Christina Ricci) nearly poisoned her to death. But in a last-minute twist, Natalie (Juliette Lewis) came to Lisa’s defense and was actually the one who died.
After the shocking finale aired, Ricci revealed that the cast were left largely in the dark the decision to kill adult Natalie.
“I didn’t know until shortly before the episode was filmed. We all love Juliette. I love Juliette. We’ve all been through so much on the show, we’ve bonded, fought, reconciled and loved each other – and we’re like sisters,” she recalled. Variety. “I think we were all very upset and sad that Natalie was dying. And it was hard to shoot. It was very emotional. We shot a lot more than we ended up with the episode where I was holding Juliette while she was dying and stuff. They were really difficult scenes and really upsetting. The next day I ran into Juliette at the airport and we both started crying again.
The actress hinted that Misty will struggle with how her decision led to Natalie’s death, adding: “It was a complete mistake. She made an impulsive choice – another characteristically immature, impulsive, selfish decision to kill the person who was going to hurt her friend. Not wanting her friends taken away is about keeping what she wants. It was a disastrous decision.”

In the current timeline, Natalie was killed by Misty using a phenobarbital injection meant for Lisa. The death seemed to calm Lottie, who decided the darkness was there with them and claimed to have accepted Natalie as a sacrifice. Lottie also hinted at Van (Lauren Ambrose) that as a result darkness heals her cancer.
The past timeline focused on the aftermath of Javi’s drowning and how the group prepared him as their next meal. Travis (Kevin Alves) gave permission for the others to eat his brother by biting off a piece of Javi’s heart. Coach Ben was disgusted by the behavior which trigger a chain of events where the group’s cabin burned down.
According to Lyle from an interview with Entertainment Weeklya “small time jump in both timelines” occurs.
“One thing that’s always been important to us is that the timelines are really connected in terms of the characters and the overall character of the characters and the ramifications of what they went through didn’t end up in the past,” she added in November 2024. “What what we’re seeing is a continuation of some of the tensions and resentments that were building in Season 2. And those really play a big part in how the girls continue to interact this season.”
“The truth is, there is a bonus episode, but we might have to wait a little longer for it,” Lyle told EW before being asked how the show will deal with the past timeline going cannibalistic. “Definitely buckle up this season. The cannibalistic cat is out of the bag.”
Deadline reported in January 2024 that the writers’ room for season 3 had reopened three months earlier. Due to delays due to the Hollywood strikes, the third season of the hit Showtime series will not air until February 14, 2025, with the premiere of two episodes.
Melanie LynskeyRicci, Tawny CypressAmbrose, Kessel, Warren Cole and Sarah Desjardins expected to return for the current storyline. Sophie Nélisse, Samantha Hanratty, Jasmin Savoy BrownThatcher, Eaton, Liv HewsonAlves and Krueger are also likely to return to the past timeline.
Joel McHale joined the show as a guest star in August 2024. A month later Hilary Swank was announced as a cast member. She has guest star status, but could be promoted to a recurring role in a potential fourth season.
After the season 2 finale, Lewis confirmed her departure from the show.
“I am beyond thrilled to be recognized for my work on @yellowjackets,” she wrote via Instagram in May 2023. “I believe this team can literally do and write anything, the chemistry and outstanding talent of this phenomenal – and ever growing – cast is something I will be on top of always wonder. You all have my heart. ❤️ Until we meet again.”
Lewis has not yet addressed whether there is potential for her to return in flashback sequences. However, Misty will continue to be affected by Natalie’s death.
“Misty’s doing great,” Lyle joked EW in November 2024: “Natalie’s death will definitely hit Misty the hardest emotionally, but I think the reverberations are felt by everyone.”
Despite her character’s on-screen death, Lewis said The Hollywood Reporter in January 2024 that he doesn’t rule out a return via flashback.
“I don’t know anything,” she said at the time. “But I think it’s a good idea. We’ll see what happens.”
Production was originally delayed to May 2023 due to the WGA strike. “Well we had exactly one day in the #YellowJackets S3 writers room. It was amazing, creatively stimulating, and so much fun, and I’m super excited to get back to it once the #WGA gets its fair share. #1u #unionstrong,” co-creator Ashley Lyle wrote via X (formerly Twitter) that same month.
The actors joined the writers two months later, and both strikes were resolved by the end of the year.
Lyle offered an update on how the writing process was going in December 2023 during a SAG-AFTRA panel, saying, “We’re deep into writing. Everyone came back so incredibly excited, hesitant and creatively charged. We’re having a lot of fun with it and we’re excited about it.”
Lyle weighed in on the decision to burn down the girls’ cabin, adding in the panel, “We wanted to find a new way to test the team, and what better way than to take away their large network of hideouts?”
“We’re in the middle (of writing) right now. I don’t want to give too much away. I always get into trouble,” Lyle said Pack in March 2024. “I would say we see Season 3 as a bit of a throwback to Season 1 in terms of atmosphere. All I’ll say is the girls have been out there (in the woods) for a while and they’re doing well.”
The Season 3 trailer revealed the Oscar winner’s look Hilary Swank. He appears with his arm bandaged and blood smeared across his face and neck. The official trailer for Season 3, released in January 2025, teased gore, murder, and mystery.
While Season 2 was still airing, Lyle hinted that it was a plan for five seasons.
“We just want to tell the best story we can, and that means taking our time and not dragging things out. And we find a natural conclusion,” she said The Hollywood Reporter in March 2023 about her vision for Yellowjackets.
There are five characters from the past timeline whose fates have not been revealed: Coach Ben, Mari, Akilah, Gen and Melissa. Based on how viewers saw Pit Girl in the pilot when the rest of the group was chasing her, Mari is the most likely candidate.
“I’m going to put it out there that Season 1 is messy and chaotic, Season 2 is still cold and dark and it was winter, and then this was the meltdown,” Hanratty told Entertainment Tonight in January 2024. , like the sisterhood of these girls.”
Steven Krueger, who plays Coach Ben, hinted that the upcoming season will be the “wildest, bloodiest” yet.
