Given the long gap between them Stranger Things‘ fourth and the highly anticipated upcoming fifth seasonit is not surprising that members of his staff are busy with other projects. David Harbor did Marvel’s Thunders*; Millie Bobby Brown owns the Russo Brothers. Electrical condition next in his ever-growing Netflix doc. But we can say that only one Hawkins, Indiana hero co-directed, co-wrote, and co-starred in a movie during hiatus: Finn Wolfhard, whose slasher comedy released a trailer today.
Hell Summer actually premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival, that is, between Stranger Things with a fourth season arriving in 2022, Wolfhard was also busy more projects (including Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire). But we are still amazed at the level of high achievement here. Watch the red tape trailer for his journey into the horrific horrors of summer camp.
The official synopsis reads: “Hell Summer It follows Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger), a 24-year-old camp counselor who arrives at Camp Pineway and thinks his biggest problem is disconnecting from his fellow teenagers. What he doesn’t know is that the masked killer is hiding in the camps, brutally picking off the counselors one by one.”
Of course, it is no coincidence that the name of the main character is Jason. The film clearly rips off several tongue-and-cheek pages Friday the 13th-and Friday the 13th Part 2both films about the selection of counselors before camp opens for business, but also poke fun at other genre tropes. Ouija, anyone?
Wolfhard (who co-wrote and directed with Billy Bryk) co-stars in a cast that also includes Bryk, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Pardis Saremi, Rosebud Baker and Adam Pally. Hell Summer arrives in theaters on April 18 to make you start rethinking all your camping plans.
