In Star Wars, Darth Vader is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous threats in the galaxy…besides his mystical powers that allow him to kill anyone who opposes him, the Sith Lord has a well-earned reputation as a ruthless warrior who helped wipe out the Jedi. However, long gone Star Wars Galaxy The MMORPG added a wrinkle to Anakin Skywalker’s story that even the biggest fans couldn’t have predicted. According to the game, Darth Vader accidentally saved the galaxy by killing Separatist scientists who were about to unleash a new droid army powered by the technology of the HK-47 assassin droid.
The story of Darth Vader accidentally saving the galaxy requires us to go back a long, long time… specifically to the beloved 2003 RPG. Knights of the Old Republic. The game introduced HK-47, a popular droid who loves nothing more than murdering people and aliens who oppose him (for this death-loving droid, all biological entities are just “meatbags”). Later, the HK-47 was brought back to Trials with Obi-Wan an expansion that added the planet Mustafar and more than 50 quests to the classic MMORPG Star Wars Galaxy.
What does it have to do with it? Darth Vader save the galaxy right? Before arriving on Mustafar for his epic battle with former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Galaxy claims that Separatist scientists discovered the remains of HK-47 and were horrified and amazed by the droid’s ability to kill anything (both droid and organic) in its path when reactivated. The scientists captured the droid’s mind (they were unable to successfully erase its memory), stole its chassis, and developed the HK-77 droid, which was more advanced than anything the prequel Jedi had ever faced.
The same scientists were preparing to mass-produce these more advanced droids, and this could be enough to turn the tide in the Clone Wars and allow the Separatists to defeat the Old Republic once and for all. However, the fate of these Separatists was sealed once Palpatine told young Anakin Skywalker that the leaders of the Confederacy of Independent Systems were hiding on Mustafar. The enraged warrior, now christened Darth Vader, killed these leaders before fighting Obi-Wan Kenobi, effectively halting production of the HK-77 and effectively saving the galaxy.
unfortunately, Star Wars Galaxy off many years ago and ever since Disney acquired the franchise, all of these old stories were removed from canon and relegated to Legends status. This means that this story of Darth Vader accidentally saving everyone’s favorite galaxy far, far away is no longer an “official” part of the Star Wars narrative, nor is the story of HK-47’s body being found on Mustafar.
However, the droid itself may have made its way back into the official canon… at least from a certain point of view. In Chuck Wendig’s book Consequences: The end of the empirethe droid character Mister Bones breaks down at one point and says “COMMENT: I SAY WE GET THE BAG CLOSER AND SAVE YOU THE TROUBLE, MASTER.” This is echo of how HK-47 spoke in the Knights of the Old Republic games, though it’s up to fans to interpret whether this is merely an easter egg or confirmation that the assassin droid’s programming is officially alive thousands of years later.
For Star Wars fans sick of the Disney era and the failures of the sequel trilogy, the story of Darth Vader accidentally saving the galaxy is a nice throwback to the days of the Expanded Universe. Back then, talented writers were finding more and more innovative ways to tie our favorite characters and stories together. These days, however, we have to settle for being impressed when Disney can deliver a single series (Hi, Skeleton Crew) that managed to bed the Sith, which makes this particular meat sack infinitely sad flight of lost creative potential for the most popular sci-fi franchise.
