Fitbit was fined $12 million for burning the Ionic smartwatch

Fitbit settled With the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) due to the long-term defeat that caused some users to continue to burn. The settlement finds the Google-owned fitness company paying $12.25 million in fines over problems with its Ionic smartwatch.

The release dates back to 2018 and will continue until 2020. Fitbit agreed remember what was worn As the CPSC noted in March 2022, it “poses an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death to consumers.”

According to the CPSC, a software update released in early 2020 failed to completely fix the problem.

“Even though it had information that reasonably supported the conclusion that the smartwatch contained a defect that could pose a significant product hazard or create an unreasonable risk of serious injury, Fitbit did not immediately notify the Commission as required,” the organization notes.

In total, 115 US consumers reported an issue with the smartwatch’s battery overheating. Seventy-eight people reported burns, of which two were third-degree burns and four were second-degree burns.

The settlement also requires Fitbit to submit an annual report to the commission with an internal audit of its security operations. Fitbit must also maintain “internal controls and procedures designed to ensure compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA), including improvements to the compliance program,” according to the agreement.
