JetBrains launches Junie, a new AI coding agent for its IDEs

JetBrainsThe company behind coding tools like the IntelliJ IDE for Java and Kotlin (and indeed the Kotlin language itself) launched on Thursday. Junea new AI coding agent. The company says this agent will be able to perform routine development tasks when you want to build new apps and understand the context of existing projects you want to extend with new features.

Using the well-regarded SWEBench Verified benchmark of 500 common developer tasks, Junie can handle 53.6% of them in one run. Not too long ago, this would have been the highest score, but it’s worth noting that the best performing models at this point score more than 60%, with Weights and Biases “Programmer O1 crosscheck5” currently leading the score. 64.6%. JetBrains itself calls Junie’s score “promising.”

But even with a lower score, the JetBrains service may have an advantage due to its tight integration with the rest of the JetBrains IDE. The company notes that while Junie helps developers complete their work, a human is always in control, even when delegating tasks to an agent.

“AI-generated code can be just as flawed as code written by a developer,” the company writes in the announcement. “As a result, Junie will not only accelerate development, but is poised to raise the bar for code quality. Combining the power of JetBrains IDEs with LLMs, Junie can generate code, run inspections, write tests and verify that they pass. “

It may take some time to try it yourself. The service is only available through the early access program behind a waiting list. For now, it only works on Linux and Mac, as well as IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and PyCharm Professional IDEs, with WebStorm coming soon.
