Trump’s actions have created great excitement among the extreme right in the United States. They have also been hailed as plans by far-right MPs, extremist influencers and fans of white supremacist groups around the world. And those people and organizations now believe that Trump’s actions should not only be copied, but taken to the next level.
Martin Sellner, leader of Austria’s Identitarian Movement and far-right activist, wrote on the Telegram channel: “This is nothing more than a political success. “This is a metapolitical victory: the end of awakening and trans ideology, the end of illegal immigration, and many other ideas are normalized in society.”
“These extremists think that this is the way to go, that their countries should learn from what Trump is proposing, and they shouldn’t be weak on this and let woke activists get in their way, because everybody knows that.” The right thing to do is get rid of immigrants,” Wendy Via, CEO of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, tells WIRED.
Sellner, who once Christchurch Massacre shooter contactedbest known for popularizing the white nationalist concept of “remigration,” the idea of ethnically cleansing western nations of non-white citizens. This extremist ideology has gained sympathy among other far-right groups in Europe, among others Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Austrian Freedom Party. Now, Sellner believes Trump’s return to the Oval Office marks a moment to take his agenda mainstream.
“By pushing further into the realm of ‘non-negotiables,’ we are moving beyond the defensive and truly shifting the Overton Window to the right for the first time,” Sellner writes. “Even if you think Trumpism has gone far enough, you have to support the radical wing.”
Sellner is not alone in Europe. Across the continent, far-right figures have praised Trump’s actions on migration and gender and urged leaders in their own countries to follow suit.
The Generation Identity group, the youth wing of the far-right Identitarian movement in France, wrote on Telegram: “Remigration continues at full speed. “Identitarianism has won ideologically, it only takes time for this victory to be reflected in the material world.”
In Ireland, Keith Woods, a far-right influencer and Ally of US white racist Nick FuentesHe shared a clip of Musk’s Nazi-like salute: “Ok, maybe he woke up, he really died.” Irish UFC fighter Conor McGregor, who has aligned himself with Ireland’s far-right community in recent years, was in the Capitol for the inauguration and met with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. McGregor praised Trump’s immigration policies and wrote on Instagram: “Ireland and its human trafficking racket must be dismantled! This is a violation of our security and sovereignty. For me, this is a NATIONAL EMERGENCY.” (McGregor recently said he was considering running for president in Ireland, a symbolic role without any real power.)
