Trainer Bernie Tha Boxer has confirmed that Terence Crawford vs. Canelo Álvarez is “on track for September 13.”
Bernie says Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) has earned the fight against unified middleweight champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) with what he has accomplished, and he doesn’t need to go up to 168 to beat any of the contenders to prove their worth. What he did from 135 to 154 is enough.

Bernie says Crawford’s name will be first before Canelo for the September 13 fight. That’s hard to believe, obviously. Sounds like a hustle From Crawford and his team, but if Turki al-Sheikh is willing to pay for the 38-year-old bud to move up two weight classes to fight Canelo, that’s what he wants. Depending on what the purses are for Canelo and Crawford, you could make a profit. I don’t think he will do it if the PPV price is low.
Canelo will be the one bringing in fans because Crawford is not a pay-per-view draw. Even with his fight against Ismael Madrimov with a card loaded with big fights last August, it didn’t bring many buys.

“The things he did have barely been done before. Twice undisputed unified champion in three weights but (won) four (divisions). It has been on the pound for pound list for over 10 years. What more can you ask for? We didn’t get the Pacquiao or Mayweather fight or anyone of that caliber. This is the fight,” Bernie said.
Crawford did not fight against great opposition to become an undisputed two-division champion. He was like another Adrien Broner, winning four division world titles against fringe opposition. Terence never beat the great fighters to win any of their titles in any weight division. It was maneuvered well to avoid being hit.

“The guy (Canelo) is bigger and has a lot of experience. He is young. Canelo is 34 or 35 years old, something like that. Nothing is easy for us. We never got Pacquiao or a guy our size with the global impact he has. They made sure they stayed away from us. It’s no different,” Bernie said.
It can be argued that Crawford is dodging fighters for his career at the end of his career in the same way Pacquiao did when he was 37 or 38 years old and showed no interest in fighting him. Crawford is not rushing to fight Jaron Ennis, Bakhram Murtazaliev, Vergil Ortiz or Serhii Bohachuk. He’s doing the same thing Pacquiao did late in his career, picking and choosing.
“We faced tough challengers and beat them. So, they give us Canelo Álvarez, a hard blow, an IQ of the same caliber and a legend. That’s the only challenge Crawford sought, and it was only right. We deserved this challenge to be on the big stage in a mega fight in a super fight in what we call a David vs. Goliath.
“Once again, we have many disadvantages in this fight in terms of weight, in terms of power and many things on par in terms of achievements and skills. We will climb that mountain. It’s on, baby. September 13, I’m looking forward to it. Crawford vs. Cinnamon. Like I said, Crawford vs. Cinnamon. Yes, it is confirmed. Crawford vs. Canelo, not the other way around.
“Team Crawford stands up. Pound for pound, the best in the world. He will soon be the super middleweight champion of the world,” Bernie said.
