Screenwriter Paul Schrader, known for his acclaimed works as “Taxi Driver”, “Raging Bull” and “First Reformed”, surprised fans when he shared his apparent approval of artificial intelligence.
In a series of publications last week, Oscar nominated marveled at AI and Chatgpt’s capabilities when it was his profession.
“I just realized that AI is smarter than me. It has better ideas, it has more efficient ways to execute them.” He wrote on January 16.

He continued: “This is an existential moment, similar to what Kasparov felt in 1997 when he realized that Deep Blue was going to beat him in chess,” referring to the great Russian Chess master Garry Kasparov, who faced a supercomputer from a supercomputer IBM called Deep Blue in the play and lose.
Later that same day, Schrader shared another publication, To say: “I just sent Chatgpt a script that I had written a few years ago and asked for improvements. In five seconds he responded with notes such good or better than I have received from a film executive.”
On January 17, Schrader declared that he was “stunned” by Chatgpt capabilities.

He wrote: “I just asked Chatgpt ‘an idea for Paul Schrader’s movie.’ Then, Paul Thomas previous. Original.
“Why should writers sit for months looking for a good idea when AI can provide one in seconds?”
“I just realized that AI is smarter than me. It has better ideas, it has more efficient ways to execute them.”
The last publication, as well as the others, generated a lot of discussion in the comments, with many surprised that a scriptwriter and veteran director would express such Interest in technology.

Several people also joked by saying that Schrader’s page had been pirated, given how many publications he shared about AI, and some asked “did you write this?”
Schrader also praised the 2013 film “Her”, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with an AI operating system, Explained by Scarlett Johansson.
“It is even more relevant, second and deeply spooky than ten years ago. This movie grows in stature. I liked it then, I love it now. There is only one like that,” he said about the movie.
