In October 2024 Payne died aged 31 after falling from the third floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. An inquest was held after his death and the hotel was searched multiple times.
According to a preliminary autopsy, Payne’s cause of death was listed as “multiple trauma” that included bleeding to the chest, skull and abdomen. A partial autopsy reportedly found “pink cocaine” – a mixture of methamphetamine, ketamine and MDMA – cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack in the Payne system.
In November 2024, the public prosecutor’s office accused three people — who were not named at the time — with abandonment leading to death and supplying and aiding and abetting narcotics. According to the 180-page indictment, “associate” Payne, a hotel employee and narcotics supplier, was among the suspects. Public prosecutor Andrés Esteban Madrea asked that the suspects give statements and be arrested.
The following month, a local Argentine news site reported it five people were charged in connection with Payne’s death. Payne’s friend Roger Nores he was among those facing manslaughter charges, along with two CasaSur Palermo employees Esteban Grassi and Gilda Martinová. Brian Nahuel Paizwaiter and employee of CasaSur EZequiel Pereyra were accused of allegedly supplying drugs to Payne before his death. All five people were summoned to court.

At the start of the investigation, Paiz was immediately considered a suspect. Paiz, the waiter who was accused of supplying Payne with narcotics, eventually denied selling drugs to the late musician. Paiz claimed met Payne when he ate at a restaurant where Paiz worked in Puerto Madero weeks before his death.
While Payne dined at the establishment, Paiz claimed the singer was “already under the influence of drugs and not really eating anything.” However, the duo exchanged information and met another time.
“We took drugs together, but I never took drugs from him or accepted any money,” Paiz claimed in an interview with an Argentine agency in November 2024. Telef News.
That same month, Paiz exclusively said My Weekly that he wanted help the authorities in their ongoing investigation.
“I want to contribute everything: my phone, everything to the investigation,” Paiz said. “I have nothing that can harm me. … Another thing is to contribute what I have personally seen and experienced firsthand.”
In December 2024, Paiz was charged with allegedly supplying Payne with drugs. Our he confirmed this in January 2025 he was arrested and faces four to 15 years in prison.
Pereyra, who was a CasaSur employee, was charged with allegedly supplying drugs to Payne before his death. Local outlets reported that Pereyra was arrested in January 2025, nearly a week after Paiz, per CBS News.
Nores, who was a close friend of Payne’s, was accused of abandoning Payne before his death and was charged with manslaughter. Nores vehemently he denied the charges.
“I never left Liam. I went to his hotel three times that day and left 40 minutes before it happened,” Nores told the Daily Mail in a statement in November 2024. “When I left, there were over 15 people chatting and joking with him in the hotel lobby. I never imagined something like this would happen.”
In December 2024 Nores testified regarding Payne’s drug use and claimed his struggles continued despite seeking treatment.
“Due to his addiction, Payne continued to visit rehab centers of his own volition in an effort to overcome them,” Nores said in the court filing. “Unfortunately, this treatment was not successful and his addiction worsened when he started using harder drugs such as heroin.”
While Nores was charged with manslaughter, he was not arrested.
Grassi served as a hotel receptionist. Grassi was accused of asking others to take Payne to his room before his death and was subsequently charged with manslaughter. Grassi was not arrested.
Martin worked as a manager at the CasaSur Palermo hotel. Grassi was charged with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly failing to prevent Payne from being taken to his hotel room before his fatal fall. according to the BBC. No arrests were made.
