Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican for Alaska, voted in favor of 19 of the 21 Cabinet nominees of former president Joe Biden in 2021, as shown by a Fox News Digital Fox analysis.
Murkowski voted against the confirmation of former Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra and did not vote about the appointment of former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh.
He voted in favor of the Biden candidate for the Supreme Court, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Alaska’s senator faces an avalanche of president’s attacks Donald TrumpHer supporters for her opposition to her candidate to lead the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth.
“I congratulate Pete Hegseth’s service to our nation, including the leadership of troops in combat and the defense of our veterans. However, these achievements do not relieve my important concerns regarding their nomination,” Murkowski said in an extensive statement published in X this week.
He expressed concern about his lack of relevant experience in the policy of the Pentagon, as well as accusations that he missed two veterans organizations that he previously directed, and accusations of sexual assault and excessive alcohol consumption, all of which Hegseth has denied.
“While accusations of sexual assault and excessive consumption of alcohol do nothing to calm my concerns, the past behaviors that Mr. Hegseth has admitted, including infidelity on multiple occasions, demonstrates a lack of judgment that is improper of Someone who would lead our armed forces. “Murkowski wrote.
Moderate Republican Murkowski will not support Trump’s election to Hegseth for Secretary of Defense
Among those who criticized his position were representative Derrick Van Order, Republican for Wisconsin, former Navy Seal. Van Order pointed to Murkowski for voting for Biden Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, for his leadership during the withdrawal of the United States from Afghanistan.
“You voted for the two men responsible for the murder of these 13 heroes. Internet is forever, your time in office,” Van Order wrote, in reference to the dead military during a suicidal attack in Kabul.
“I strongly recommend that he says goodbye to the staff who gave this horrible advice and wrote his publication X”.
However, some on the right agree with Murkowski. A republican legislator previously told Fox News Digital about Hegseth: “The Army said goodbye to people who behaved as Hegseth. Being the (Secretary of Defense) will cause discipline problems.”
Murkowski He told Politico In 2020 that “all presidents have the right to their cabinet”, but it was the responsibility of the Senate to ensure that these people “are good, qualified and credible candidates.”
