Robeisy Ramírez turns 31 today

Two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez turns 31 today, following an injury loss to WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza on December 7 in their rematch at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Former WBO 126-pound champion Robeisy (14-3, 9 KOs) was forced to quit in the sixth round after suffering an injury to his right eye. It turns out that Ramírez had suffered a fracture of the orbital bone of his right eye.

Robeisy believes the injury occurred early in the fight after taking an elbow from the 6’1″ Espinoza in the fourth round. Replays showed Robeisy being hit by a club-like elbow from Espinoza in that round.

Before the injury occurred in the sixth, Robeisy had been outplaying Espinoza and looked like he was on his way to victory. However, just like in the first fight, Espinoza caught Robeisy with accidental elbows. His height makes him a danger to shorter fighters, who are hit with elbows when he throws his hooks.

What’s next for Robeisy?

Ramirez has yet to announce his plans for his next fight after he recovers from his eye injury. He has now lost twice to Espinoza and the Cuban talent would be wise to move on.

The 5’6′ Robeisy needs to focus on fighting normal-sized fighters in the featherweight division, as Espinoza is a freak by nature. He’s more designed to fight at 135 or 140 with his height rather than exhausting himself fighting smaller guys at 126. Robeisy is unbeatable when fighting normal-sized featherweights.
