Actor Anthony Mackie, who plays Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World”, published a statement explaining previous controversial comments about the character after they became viral online.
“Let me be clear about this, I am a proud American and assume a hero’s shield as Cap is the honor of his life,” Mackie wrote on Tuesday in comments shared on his Instagram account. “I have the greatest respect for those who serve and have served our country. CAP has universal characteristics with which people around the world can identify.”
Mackie issued the statement on Tuesday after he said before while he was on a press tour to promote his next Marvel movie that he does not believe that the character represents the United States.

The actor made the comments on a press tour for the fourth installment of the Captain America franchise at the Hotel de la Ville in Rome, Italy, on January 27.
