Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed president for the transition period

The de facto leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has been appointed president of the “transition period”, report of state media, seven weeks after leading the rebel offensive that defeated Bashar Al-Assad.

The rebel military commander, Hassan Abdul Ghani, also announced the cancellation of the Constitution of Syria in 2012 and the dissolution of the agencies of the Parliament, the Army and the security of the old regime, according to the healthy news agency.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said its delegation expressed “unwavering support” for the unity and preparation of Syria to help its recovery of the civil war.

The Russian army carried out tens of thousands of air attacks in areas controlled by the rebels after intervening in the conflict in support of Assad in 2015. A monitoring group based in the United Kingdom says that more than 21,000 people, including 8,700 civilians were killed by these strikes and other Russian operations.

Since the fall of the Assad regime, Russia has been removing troops and weapons from its two bases on the Mediterranean coast of Syria: Hmeimim Airbase near Latakia and the Naval Base in Tartous

The recent satellite photos analyzed by BBC Verify showed that two Russian warships were docked in Tartousthat according to experts they suggested that an evacuation of the installation had begun.

However, it is believed that Russia is trying to retain both bases, which gives it a strategically important support point in the Eastern Mediterranean.

After the visit of the Russian delegation to Damascus, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists in Moscow: “That was an important trip, and the contacts were also important, because it is necessary to establish and maintain a constant dialogue with Syria”.

When asked about the reports that the Syrian government had requested the extradition of Assad and war repairs in return, he replied: “I leave this without any comments. We will continue a greater dialogue with the Syrian authorities.”

In an interview with Al Arabiya TV at the end of last month, Sharaa pointed out the “deep strategic interests between Russia and Syria” and said he did not want Russia to go “in a way that undermines its relationship with our country.”

“All Syrian arms are of Russian origin, and many power plants are managed by Russian experts,” he added.
