Promoter Frank Warren was complaining something fierce after his fighter, Tyson Fury, lost to unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk by a 12-round unanimous decision Saturday night in their rematch in Riyadh.
Fury ran out of the ring afterwards, not wanting to face the music and have his feet held to the fire by the media for questioning him. What does that tell you? If he thought he had won, he would have stayed, stood up on his hind legs, and complained about it.
The judges were right and gave Usyk 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. I had it 10-2 in favor of Usyk. Even in close rounds, Fury did nothing but throw backhands and weak jabs.
Warren was “stunned” by the scores from two of the judges, which had Usyk (23-0, 12 KOs) sweeping every round from the sixth onwards against former WBC heavyweight champion Fury (34-2- 1, 24 KOs). The other judge had Fury win only one round of the last six.
I watched the fight and had Usyk sweep every round from the fifth. It seemed easy to score, as Fury’s reflexes seemed shot and he did almost nothing on offense. He seemed afraid to throw punches for fear of being countered by Usyk’s sniper-like left hand.
The once-thin Fury who defeated Wladimir Klitschko in his prime in 2015 disappeared tonight. In his place was a flabby heavyweight in his 40s who was unable to pull the trigger on his punches.
The Gypsy King fought exactly like 39-year-old Wladimir did nine years ago. Wlad couldn’t pull the trigger that night in Dusseldorf, Germany, and Fury did the same tonight. I was mentally locked up,
‘I’m dumbfounded. They gave (Fury) four rounds out of twelve, which is impossible,” promoter Frank Warren told TNT Sports Boxing, complaining that his fighter, Tyson Fury, lost on the scorecards to unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch in Riyadh.
“I know I’m biased, but a judge didn’t give him a single round from the sixth onwards. How can that be? That’s impossible. Same with the other judge here. He gave him a round of the last six. Same here with this guy. It’s crazy.
“I am calm, I am serene. I’m not yelling or screaming. That’s nonsense. Everyone in that front row. Oscar De La Hoya and I made him (Fury) win by three or four rounds. That’s Oscar and he’s neutral. He only won one round on two of the judges’ cards from the sixth round onwards. I mean, what fight were they watching? Warren said, criticizing the judges for not giving the victory to her fighter, Fury.
