I tripped ,a reddit thread, that really got my attention.
Someone asked, “What has finally been the ‘one thing’ that works for you in losing weight?”
And this question had 5,400 answers (and counting).
Some of the answers were environmental changes or changes in the way food was prepared:
“Putting pee into snacks to eat them. Suddenly I ate a normal number of snacks.’
“I prepare my typical amount of food for meals and instead of putting it in 2 bowls, I divide it evenly into 4 bowls. I forced myself to eat just one bowl per meal and tricked my brain into thinking it was my normal amount.”
Others changed what they ate:
“I found a salad that I really like. It sounds silly, but I’ve never liked a salad, and having one that I actually liked meant I was stuck eating a lot of lettuce for a few weeks; from there it snowballed because I felt really good and then I started craving it. good.”
Some took a more holistic approach that led to a re-evaluation of their relationship with food, hunger and discomfort:
“Realize it’s a lifestyle change NOT a diet.”
“Embrace the suffering. Expect to breathe heavily and uncomfortably when you’re doing cardio, expect to be sore after lifting, and expect to be hungry when you cut back on your intake.”
Others used apps to track their calorie intake, which helped them realize how much they were eating:
“Using an app to track everything I eat. I realized that a lot of the “healthy” things I was eating, in the amounts I was eating, had a lot more calories than I thought. The trick was simply to reduce certain foods.’
And some got it thanks to an initial boost from the drug:
“I saw a doctor about my type 2 diabetes. I weighed over 300 pounds and also had coronary artery disease. I qualified for diabetes medications that help control appetite. Started tracking calories and exercising.”
“Semaglutide”
Some prioritized physical activity over food:
“Finding a hobby. I was eating because I was bored. Coming home from work to sit on the couch would make it so much easier to eat like a mica…now I go and do something I enjoy so I don’t have any distractions while eating.”
“On foot Checking that I’ve lost 45lbs in 7 months just from walking around my neighborhood every night. It was free and low impact, I walked rain or shine even through snow storms. Now I have a treadmill and I walk indoors, but the feeling is as great as at the beginning.’
As we sift through this list, reading thousands of comments about the “one thing” that changed their lives, and how different many of them are, we can draw some fascinating conclusions.
LESSON 1: “Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill.
It’s the hardest thing to stay healthy no don’t lose hope if any of the strategies you try don’t work. I bet for every person who shared the answer above, they tried dozens of different strategies to try to get fit. Heck, I bet they tried most of the things that worked for other people until they found what worked for them
What we can learn from it: “It is hope ,warrior emotion that wastes cynicism,,” and it’s okay to hope that every failed attempt means one less strategy to try in the future.
For example, if you’ve tried Keto 5 times before and can’t keep going, congratulations! You’ve found a diet that doesn’t work for you
If you can keep it up ,‘beta test’ mentality, “I’ll see if it works”, you might find the first domino to fall your trip!
LESSON 2: Beware of the Charlatan.
Spend enough time on social media and you’ll eventually come across health and wellness quacks. These are the people who tell you that they only have one the only solution to all your problems. They’ve often had a villain for all the world’s ills (“its sugar! It’s carbs! It’s ingredient X!”).
And sure enough, after instilling fear and dissuading the foolishness, they give you hope with an expensive unregulated supplement or stupid system.
As you can see from the examples above, there is no “one size fits all” solution to these things. Every human being is weirdly unique with different baggage and triggers and traumas and experiences that make some solutions a homerun and other solutions won’t be triggers.
You can read more about how to spot and avoid charlatans in my past post: “,How not to go crazy on the internet,“.
Which brings me to the third point!
LESSON THREE: All fitness stories have 3 boring things in common!
While all of these “one-size-fits-all” solutions to getting in shape are different, they all have some similarities.
The good news? None of these things are revolutionary, proprietary, or fancy.
Adapting to literally 3 things:
Losing weight is not magic. It’s math and behavior change.
As I cover mine ,weight loss guide, science is established in that.
Any diet can work if it puts us in a calorie deficit. we have ,coaching clients, some who are vegan, some who do Keto, some who count calories and some who do intermittent fasting.
Our ability to make dietary changes a livable lifestyle is the key to success, and it’s different for everyone.
When talking about lifestyle changes, most of the answers above also involve finding ways to make exercise a regular part of your life.
Remember: it’s okay if you don’t LIKE to exercise. We are not designed to love exercise! Especially if it’s an activity we don’t really enjoy! We are designed to survive in times of scarcity, NOT to thrive in times of unlimited abundance.
So how do we make exercise a part of our lifestyle?
we have to find ways ,make exercise fun, beneficial, or necessary,:
Remember hope is the emotion of the warrior.
Humans are adaptable creatures, capable of change.
Keep trying different strategies, beware of charlatans, and don’t forget the basics!
And one day soon, you too might be able to share the first domino that fell that changed things for you.
