Shein has been relaunched in India by Reliance Retail

The China Shein Fast Fashion application has relaunched into India five years after Delhi prohibited it, by virtue of an agreement with the India Reliance Retail company.

A Reliance Retail official, who did not want to be appointed, told the BBC that the company has entered a long -term license agreement with the parent company to sell products manufactured and obtained in India on the platform. The group has not yet made an official announcement.

Shein’s re -entry to the Indian market comes with strict terms, which include saving all data within the country, said Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, in December.

In 2020, India prohibited Shein and dozens of other Chinese applications, including Tiktok.

He said that this was in response to data security concerns and followed an increase in tensions with China after clashes between the armies of the two countries in a border area of ​​the Himalayas in dispute.

The application was launched in India on Saturday and has so far been downloaded by more than 10,000 people. It is offering fashion clothes for only 199 rupees ($ 2.30; £ 1.90).

Currently, Shein is only giving consumers only in the cities of Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, but will soon offer services throughout India, according to a notification in the application.

During the last decade, Shein has gone from a little known brand among the buits older to one of the largest fashionable retailers worldwide. Today, it is sent to customers in 150 countries around the world.

Before the ban, it became a great success in India, since it gave people a variety of options to buy fashion designs at an affordable price. The prohibition initially left a vacuum in the Indian market that was later filled by many local players.

Experts say that with Shein India, Reliance Retail, owned by the Indian billionaire Mikesh Ambani, is diversifying its existing strategy to sell international brands through its ajio online retailer.

The revival comes with strict conditions that provide total control of retail sale about its operations and data, while Shein will be a technological partner, Goyal told the Indian Parliament in December.

All customer and applications data will be stored in India and Shein will not have any access rights, he said.

Goyal also clarified that the application was prohibited in India, not the “sale of Slein brand products.”

Shein will use India as a “supply source for its global operations” and will help depend on retail trade in “build the network” and train manufacturers of Indian garment garments, since it aims to promote the export of textiles and India garments, said the official.

Shein’s return in the agreement with Reliance Retail is a rare exception to the prohibition of India of more than 200 Chinese applications in the last five years.

At that time, Indian officials said the prohibition followed many complaints against applications for “stealing and transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized way.”
