Market attack suspect in custody amid anger over security lapses

A suspect appeared in court after an attack at a German Christmas market on Friday killed five people and injured more than 200.

The suspect, a doctor from Saudi Arabia, has been identified as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, who arrived in Germany in 2006 and was recognized as a refugee in 2016.

It comes as German authorities face a growing backlash after the suspected attacker used an access lane to allow emergency vehicles to enter the market.

During a visit on Saturday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, ministers and regional political leaders were booed by members of the public, some apparently outraged by what was criticized as a security lapse.
