Marvel has sparked serious fan interest with the news that Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU Judgment Daybut not as Tony Stark…instead he’ll somehow be playing Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom. Chris Evans and Haley Atwell have since been reported to return as well, and while most fans assume they’ll similarly play Variants, one tantalizing Marvel fan theory says otherwise. According to this theory from Reddit user WillemDaFriends, their part of the movie will take place in an alternate past that Steve Rogers traveled to in Game overand its mundane ramifications created an alternate Earth environment The Fantastic Four.
To understand the role of Chris Evans and Haley Atwell’s characters in this Marvel theory, you may need a primer on the past and future of this cinematic universe. IN Game overCaptain America used the Quantum Realm to travel through the past and return each Infinity Stone to where it came from. But then he goes romantically crazy and stays in the past to enjoy a life with Peggy Carter… a life he basically lost once he froze in the ice to wake up in the present.
Now, the next part isn’t directly about Chris Evans, but this instead Miracle the theory touches on a possible explanation for the setting of the upcoming The Fantastic Four film. We don’t know much about the first movie featuring Marvel’s first family, but we do know that it’s a 60s period piece set in an alternate Earth. Probably some of the upcoming scams Judgment Day will explain (perhaps a hard or soft reboot) how characters from half a century ago and the multiverse end up in the present (not to mention the dimensions) Avengers and other MCU heroes.
There are many ways to The Fantastic Foura multiverse could be created. However, this Chris Evans Marvel theory claims that The Fantastic Four universe is an alternate reality he accidentally created when he traveled back in time to spend his life with Peggy Carter. It makes sense, really, because The Fantastic Four The film is set in a more retro-futuristic 1960s, perhaps created by Captain America by providing advanced knowledge of the future.
In the world Star Treka Chris Evans character doing that would be a big no-no- but we can only assume he’d be willing to change the future to save countless lives. How much suffering would the MCU have been spared if someone could have warned them of Hydra’s infiltration of SHIELD or the arrival of Thanos? It’s easy to imagine Cap doing everything in his power to save lives and creating a very different universe along the way, both because of his direct actions and because various scientists would be able to study the super soldier serum he was given circulating in the veins.
It is true that this Chris Evans Marvel’s theory isn’t perfect… it doesn’t explain, for example, why an elderly Steve Rogers showed up at the end of the year. Game over when he is supposed to be stuck in another dimension. Of course we could see some timeless storytelling at work and events Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Judgment Day might explain his appearance. Either way, we desperately want this theory to be true, as it would mean seeing the “real” Cap and Peggy in the upcoming film rather than another meaningless multiverse variant or disappointing fake-out.
