The Argentine government led by Javier Milei has announced that he plans to retire from the World Health Organization (WHO).
A spokesman for President Milei said the decision to get out of WHO was triggered by “deep differences regarding health management, especially during pandemic (COVID-19).”
The announcement occurs just over two weeks after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed an executive order to begin the process of withdrawing from the international health agency.
The two leaders have expressed admiration for each other, with Milei calling Trump’s re -election the “greatest political return in history”, while the president of the United States described his Argentine counterpart as “my favorite president.”
In an official statement, the Argentine Presidential Office said that “WHO was created in 1948 to coordinate the response to global health emergencies, but failed during the greatest challenge: he advocated eternal blockages without scientific support during his battle against COVID -19 Pandemia. “
The statement also argues that “today, the evidence suggests that WHO recipes do not work because they are the result of political influence instead of being based on science.”
The Argentine media say that President Milei firm an executive order in the next few days that the Argentine process that is retired from WHO will begin.
Speaking at a press conference, presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said that “Argentines will not allow an international organism to interfere with our sovereignty, and even less with our health.”
The spokesman argued that an output of the WHO would provide Argentina with more flexibility to implement policies adapted to their own interests and administer their funds as considered convenient.
He said that WHO membership cost about $ 10 million (£ 8m) annually.
President Milei, who describes himself as an “anarchocapitalist”, has been critical of WHO for some time, but the idea of leaving the body seems to have gained traction in later days Donald Trump signed an executive order that launches the departure of the United States from the international body.

Speaking at a gala at Trump’s Mar-A-Lago Resort on the night of his meeting, Milei said that “the winds of freedom (were) much stronger since Trump’s victory.”
Asked by the reporters on Wednesday if President Milei planned to retire from other international agencies or treaties, the presidential spokesman refused to rule out anything.
“The president is very determined when it comes to making Argentina Freer, so any link that Argentina has with bodies that go against their freedoms, we will do everything possible to prevent them from interfering with the lives of Argentines.”
Environmental activists in Argentina say that Milei follows Trump’s steps and also launches the wheels to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, the international treaty that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
