It was January 22, 1988 at the Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Holmes had 48-2, and the young Tyson, 32-0, stopped in his corner.
Holmes had just lost a couple of fights against the semi -stated weight champion Michael Spinks. After the first fight, he commented: “Marciano could not use my athlete strap,” after having lost a victory far from matching Marciano’s 49-0 record instead of congressing the new Spinks champion.
Muhammad Ali and the future President Donald J. Trump were in the ringside. When Ali was introduced to the ring, he first played the Gloves of Holmes.
Then Ali approached the young champion Mike Tyson and whispered something in his ear. He later said, he said: “Páte your ass!”
Tyson left just after Holmes, since his power had the former champion looking fear for the power that the young Tyson had. Holmes tried to tie Tyson, knew what fight he had in his hands.
As each round passed, Tyson continued to overcome the former champion. In the third round, Holmes began to dance and stood out his jab as he was known in the past. It did not make the difference with the young Tyson, who overcame the jab, landing blows for the delight of the crowd.
In the fourth round, Tyson landed a right hand and went down Holmes to the canvas when referee Joe Cortez told eight. Holmes got up with a look from a beaten fighter. Tyson was on him again, dropping Holmes for the second time with his right hand. Tyson was all over Holmes, leaving him a third and last time with a right on his chin while Holmes lay on his back, counting at 2:58 of the round.
Tyson responded to the request of his idol, Ali.
In Tyson’s previous fight, he stopped the Olympic champion Tyrell Biggs, who had feared Tyson in fans. He was arrested at 2:59 of the seventh round in the convention room in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
When Tyson was 14 years old, Ali visited his school and remembered when Holmes had defeated his idol. He told his then coach, Cus d’Amatato: “Someday I will avenge me to be beating when I am old.”
After the Holmes fight, Tyson said: “It’s great to have the name of Holmes on my album,” when he was interviewed by Larry Merchant.
In Tyson’s fight in November 1986 at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, he arrested another fighter who had defeated Ali in the last fight of the former champion, Trevor Berbick, 31-4-1, in the second round, scoring one torque.
Tyson’s coach was at that time Kevin Rooney, whom many felt when Tyson dismissed him, the champion was never the same.
Many combatants fire their coaches when they lose a fight. In February 1990, Tyson, 37-0, lost to James ‘Buster’ Douglas, 28-4-1, in Tokyo, Japan, in one of the biggest surprises in the history of boxing.
Tyson never had the opportunity for a rematch as former Olympic champion Evander ‘The Real Deal “Holyfield had the opportunity and defeated Douglas in October 1990 for a third round knockout.
In Tyson’s next fight at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. He avenged his loss in Henry Tillman fans, 20-4, whom he lost in the Olympic trials.
