The United Kingdom has ordered Apple To provide officials access to user encryption accounts, Washington Post reported Friday.
The Ministry of Interior of Great Britain, which manages immigration and security, last month issued an order to Apple that requires a “back door” technique that would allow officials to see totally encrypted material loaded in the software in the cloud, he reported The post, citing people familiar with the matter.
“We do not comment on operational matters, even, for example, confirm or deny the existence of such notices,” a spokesman for the Interior Ministry.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for CNBC comments.
The iPhone manufacturer gives users the ability to store all its photos, messages, documents and more in its encrypted ICloud service: Apple’s Icloud is encrypted from end to extreme, which means that only the owner of the material can see it.
Governments in the United States, the United Kingdom and the EU have long expressed dissatisfaction with this configuration, arguing that it allows criminals, terrorists and sexual criminals to hide the illegal activity. In the United Kingdom, the 2016 Research Powers Law allows the Government to force technology companies to weaken their encryption technologies through the so -called “rear doors.”
Technology companies, including Apple, have delayed attempts to undermine encryption, saying that it would weaken user privacy.
